Tower of Andrade
Vilalba, Spain, Spain
Tower of Andrade in Vilalba, Galicia, northwestern Spain, is the sole surviving octagonal keep from a medieval castle originating in the 11th century, though the current structure dates to the 15th century after multiple reconstructions.
Originally held by the Lords of Lemos and later gifted by King Pedro I to Fernán Pérez de Andrade, it became a key stronghold for the powerful Andrade family, featuring heraldic symbols like the wild boar and enduring attacks during the Irmandiño revolts of the 15th century.
Destroyed and rebuilt several times, it was reinforced against gunpowder assaults, confiscated by the Catholic Monarchs, used in the Carlist Wars, and restored in the 1960s to house the Parador de Vilalba hotel, now a protected cultural landmark dominating the Terra Chá landscape.
