Tower of Mendoza
Mendoza, Álava, Spain, Spain
Tower of Mendoza is a 13th-century fortified tower-house in the village of Mendoza, near Vitoria-Gasteiz in Álava province, Basque Country, Spain, built by Iñigo López de Mendoza after his role in the 1212 Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, where he helped breach the Almohad chains that were added to his family crest.
Exemplifying civil Gothic architecture with five floors, it stands within a walled compound featuring four corner cubes, serving as a residence for the powerful Mendoza lineage amid Álava's medieval factional wars against rivals like the Guevaras.
Later used as a prison, it was restored in 1963 to house Álava's Heraldry Museum until 2007 accessibility issues prompted closure, preserving its status as a Cultural Interest monument.
