Trasmoz Castle
Spain, Spain
Trasmoz Castle is a medieval fortress crowning a hill above the village of Trasmoz in Zaragoza province, Aragon, Spain, with origins tracing to the 12th century when the lordship was established amid Navarre-Aragon border disputes, featuring a hexagonal layout with vertex towers including the central rectangular tower of homage built between the 13th and 15th centuries.
Site of bitter 16th-century water rights conflicts between lord Pedro Manuel Ximénez de Urrea and nearby Veruela Abbey—leading to the town's infamous papal curse and excommunication by Pope Julius II—it burned in 1520, was abandoned by 1530, and saw materials quarried for local use, fueling legends of witchcraft that persist today.
Partially restored since 1998 by the Castillo de Trasmoz Foundation, it now houses a witchcraft museum amid atmospheric ruins offering panoramic views, embodying the village's decline from 10,000 residents to around 60.
