Tulum, in the state of Quintana Roo on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, is both a rapidly growing beach town and the name of a famous Maya archaeological site just a short distance inland. The ruins sit on a low limestone cliff overlooking turquoise waters and consist of a relatively compact, walled city built between the 13th and 16th centuries that served as a coastal trade and ceremonial center, with well‑preserved pyramids, temples, and stone buildings still visible today. The modern town of Tulum has evolved from a small village into a bohemian‑style resort hub, with a “beach hotel zone” of boutique hotels, cabanas, beach clubs, and restaurants built along white‑sand shores, and a separate inland area offering shops, cafés, and easy access to cenotes and jungle trails. Located about two hours south of Cancún on the Riviera Maya, Tulum is popular for its mix of ancient history, laid‑back vibe, and scenic Caribbean coastline.
