Tynnelsö Castle
Sweden, Sweden
Tynnelsö Castle, located on Tynnelsö island in Lake Mälaren a few kilometers northeast of Strängnäs, Sweden, was first documented in 1282 and has belonged to the Diocese of Strängnäs since 1306.
Bishop Kort Rogge constructed the original stone castle in the 1490s, with the first floor remaining intact today, and it was acquired by Gustav Vasa in 1522, staying in royal possession until 1636 before returning to the crown during the Great Reduction of 1681.
The current square-shaped structure took form in the 1590s, fell into decay by the 18th century, underwent major restoration in 1826-1827, and now stands closed pending further work amid gardens with lime trees and a nearby 1876 villa.
