Originally settled in the Copper Age and refounded as Ubbada by Arabs under Abd al-Rahman II in the 9th century, it endured fierce Reconquista battles, capitulating to Ferdinand III in 1233-1234 after sieges and massacres, becoming a prosperous Castilian border town governed by a council with privileges like the Fuero de Cuenca.
