Ujung Kulon National Park

Banten, West Java, Indonesia

Ujung Kulon National Park, located at the westernmost tip of Java in Banten Province, is a sanctuary of exceptional ecological and historical significance. Encompassing over 1,200 square kilometers of land and marine ecosystems, the park includes the Ujung Kulon Peninsula, several offshore islands such as Peucang and Panaitan, and the Krakatoa island group.

It is the last refuge of the critically endangered Javan rhinoceros, with fewer than 80 individuals surviving in the wild, making it one of the most important conservation areas in Southeast Asia. The park’s landscapes are a tapestry of lowland rainforests, mangrove swamps, savannas, coral reefs, and volcanic remnants.

Mount Honje and Mount Payung rise above the dense jungle, while rivers like the Cigenter wind through thick vegetation, offering a glimpse into a primeval world. The 1883 eruption of Krakatoa devastated the region, but nature’s resilience has since transformed it into a thriving ecosystem teeming with life. Over 270 bird species, including the Javan hawk-eagle and oriental pied hornbill, share the forest canopy with primates like the Javan gibbon and silvered leaf monkey.

The coastal waters are home to green sea turtles, saltwater crocodiles, and vibrant coral reefs.
