Vama Veche is a small seaside village in Constanța County, Romania, sitting right on the Black Sea coast very close to the border with Bulgaria, about 47 kilometers south of the city of Constanța.

Once a quiet border checkpoint that gave it its name, meaning “Old Customs,” it has become best known as a liberal, bohemian beach destination with a relaxed and alternative vibe, attracting backpackers, students, and artists who enjoy its campsites, simple pensions, and informal nightlife.

The village is famous in Romania for its long stretch of fine‑sand beach, where clothing‑optional sunbathing and a generally laid‑back atmosphere are common, and it also hosts music festivals and street‑market events in summer that contribute to its reputation as a countercultural summer hub.

Over the last decades, Vama Veche has seen more development and tourism pressure, which has led to local environmental‑conservation campaigns trying to preserve its character and reduce overbuilding while still allowing visitors to enjoy its coastal location and easy access to the Bulgarian border.
