Varta Castle

Varta Castle is the ruin of a medieval Gothic castle located about 1.5 kilometers southwest of Velké Březno in the Ústí nad Labem Region of Czechia.

The castle was founded in the second half of the 13th century, probably by the Vartenberk family, and later belonged to the Škopek family of Dubá before returning to the Vartenberks. The fortress stood on a strategic hilltop above the surrounding landscape and served as a local administrative and defensive center.

By the early 15th century it was abandoned, and references to the castle gradually disappeared from historical records. Today, only earthworks, defensive ditches, ramparts, and small fragments of masonry remain. Archaeological evidence suggests that the castle once included an outer bailey, a fortified inner area, and possibly a defensive tower and residential palace.

Although little of the structure survives, Varta is protected as a Czech cultural monument and attracts visitors interested in medieval history, quiet forest walks, and the scenic landscape of the Bohemian Central Highlands.
