Velhartice Castle is a striking medieval castle in western Bohemia, Czechia, built between the late 13th and early 14th centuries by the Lords of Velhartice.

It became closely associated with Emperor Charles IV through the influential noble family that owned it and played an important role in regional politics and defense. The castle is famous for its unusual architecture, especially a rare stone bridge that connects the main palace to a massive defensive tower called a donjon.

This distinctive design is considered one of the most remarkable examples of medieval military architecture in Central Europe. Over the centuries, the complex was expanded with Gothic and Renaissance elements, creating a unique blend of styles. Today, Velhartice Castle is one of the Czech Republic’s most picturesque historic sites, attracting visitors with its well-preserved ruins, grand palaces, scenic setting, and rich medieval history.
