Villapadierna Castle
Spain, Spain
Villapadierna Castle is a small 15th-century Gothic-style fortress located just outside the village of Villapadierna in León province, Spain, near the church of San Cornelio y San Cipriano.
Built after 1431 by Admiral Fadrique Enríquez as a gift from King Juan II of Castilla, it later passed to the House of Alba and the Marquise of Villafranca, who in 1797 allowed its central square tower to house parish bells, adapting it into a makeshift bell tower.
Featuring a double enclosure wall—much of the outer one now semi-ruined—with granite ashlar details on loopholes, gateways, and a once-water-filled moat, it exemplifies low medieval defensive architecture but faces decay, listed on Spain's Red List of endangered heritage since 2007 despite some community cleanup efforts.
