Walled enclosure of Montblanc
Montblanc, Spain, Spain
The Walled enclosure of Montblanc in Catalonia, Spain, is one of the best-preserved medieval defensive structures in the region, built in the 14th century under King Peter III the Ceremonious amid wars against Castile.
Spanning a 1,500-meter perimeter with around 30 rectangular towers—most open inside and featuring loopholes, battlements, and machicolations—it originally encircled the town completely with four main gateways aligned to cardinal points and protective moats.
Damaged over centuries by conflicts like the Reapers' War and repurposed for housing or pasture, restoration efforts began in 1971, preserving it today as a Historic-Artistic Ensemble declared in 1948, integrated into Montblanc's medieval old town.
