Walls of Plasencia
Plasencia, Spain, Spain
The Walls of Plasencia are a well-preserved 12th-century medieval fortification encircling the historic city of Plasencia in Cáceres province, Extremadura, Spain, constructed starting in 1178 under King Alfonso VIII of Castile shortly after the city's founding to defend against invasions during the Reconquista.
Spanning several kilometers with massive stone blocks, the double-walled system includes a moat, around 70 semicircular turrets, four major defensive towers like Torre Lucía (now an interpretation center), and seven main gates such as Puerta de Berrozana, Puerta del Sol, and Trujillo Gate.
Completed by 1201, these robust defenses shaped the city's military layout around the Plaza Mayor and remain a prominent feature, blending with later urban developments despite partial demolitions for 19th-century expansion.
