Walls of Urueña
Urueña, Spain, Spain
Walls of Urueña form an exceptional 12th-13th century medieval enclosure surrounding the hilltop village of Urueña in Valladolid province, Castilla y León, Spain, covering nearly 7 hectares with 80% intact masonry walls topped by battlements and a walkable adarve path.
Fortified by Alfonso VIII amid Castile-León border conflicts after earlier Infantazgo ties, the irregular layout adapts to the páramo escarpment, featuring semicylindrical towers and two key gates: Puerta del Azogue (northern elbow-defended entry) and Arco de la Villa (southern valley-facing arch).
Recently rehabilitated with 2017 consolidations, these well-preserved defenses complement the site's castle ruins, earning recognition as Spain's sole "Villa del Libro" amid panoramic Tierra de Campos vistas.
