Zahara de la Sierra Castle
Spain, Spain
Zahara de la Sierra Castle is a 13th-century Nasrid fortress crowning a rocky hilltop in the white village of Zahara de la Sierra, Cádiz province, Andalusia, Spain, strategically positioned between Ronda and Seville to guard vital routes during the Reconquista. Originally a Moorish outpost, it changed hands multiple times—captured by Christians in 1407, retaken by Granada's forces in 1481, and definitively seized in 1483 by Rodrigo Ponce de León—featuring thick walls, towers, and a prominent square Torre del Homenaje keep blending Moorish and Christian architecture. Last used militarily during the 1810-1812 Peninsular War against French invaders, its restored ruins now offer panoramic reservoir views as a declared historical monument since 1985.
