Verified Zámek Prostějov

Prostějov, Czechia, Czech Republic (Czechia)

Zámek Prostějov is a Renaissance castle located in the town of Prostějov in the Czech Republic. It was built between 1522 and 1526 by Jan IV of Pernštejn, originally intended as a fortress and forming part of the town's defensive walls.

Between 1568 and 1572, the castle underwent an extensive reconstruction by Vratislav II of Pernštejn, transforming it into a noble residence. Over time, the castle became part of the estate of the Liechtenstein family and was used for various purposes including as an agricultural administrative center, a grain storage facility, and even a prison for non-Catholics. The castle suffered damage during the Swedish raid in 1643 but was partially repaired afterward.

Architecturally, it is a one-story building with four wings surrounding a rectangular courtyard, blending Renaissance style with later Neo-Renaissance and Secessionist modifications.

Its deep moat, originally designed for defense and surrounding the castle, still exists today, often accessible to visitors. Although no longer a noble residence, Zámek Prostějov remains a significant cultural monument reflecting the history and changing roles of castles in Czech towns.
