Zámek Škvorec
Škvorec, Czechia, Czech Republic (Czechia)
Zámek Škvorec, also known as Savoia Castle, is a historic castle located near Prague in the Czech Republic.
The site was first mentioned in 1279, with full documentation as a Gothic castle appearing by 1404. Its origins trace to a noble family, likely Domaslav, who served Queen Kunigunda of Slavonia as a courtier, establishing its initial noble status.
The castle underwent significant changes over the centuries; in the 1520s, it was transformed from a Gothic fortress into a Renaissance palace, reflecting the architectural style of that period. During the devastating Thirty Years’ War in 1639, the castle was looted and set on fire, leaving it in ruins for over a century until it was restored in Baroque style.
The castle's modern identity became intertwined with the noble House of Savoy, especially through Princess Maria Theresa of Soissons, who lived there for over 50 years from 1729. Today, the castle has been extensively restored and serves as a cultural and event venue that celebrates its rich history and noble heritage, blending its centuries-old architecture with modern hospitality.
