Verified Žehušice

Czech Republic, Czech Republic (Czechia)

Žehušice is a small market town in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, with about 900 inhabitants.

It is located near Kutná Hora, lying in a flat agricultural landscape on the left bank of the Doubrava River. The town has a history dating back to 1350, and it was promoted to a market town in 1540, with this status confirmed again in 1865 after a loss in 1601.

An important historical owner of Žehušice was the Thun und Hohenstein family, who owned it from 1661 to 1918. Žehušice is notable for its Deer Park, a large nature monument established in 1867, which is home to a rare herd of white stags.

The town also features an early Baroque castle rebuilt in the Empire style, a Baroque church of Saint Mark with a unique Moorish-style bell tower, and the old Renaissance fortress known as the Old Castle, which is the birthplace of the musician Giovanni Punto.

The landscape around Žehušice, including the deer park and castle park, is protected as a monument zone for its well-preserved Baroque urbanism and landscape design. Despite these attractions, the deer park is privately owned and closed to the public, and the town has no major roads or railways passing directly through it.
