Zřícenina Hradu Velešín is the remains of one of the oldest stone castles in South Bohemia, located near Svatý Jan nad Malší on a rocky ridge above the Malše River.

The castle was founded in the first half of the 13th century, probably by a Czech king, to help protect important trade routes and strengthen royal authority in the region. Over the centuries, the castle was owned by several noble families, including the Lords of Michalovice and the powerful Rožmberk family.

Although it survived the Hussite era, it was abandoned in 1487 due to structural problems and high maintenance costs, and by 1541 it was already described as deserted. Today, only fragments of walls, fortifications, and parts of the original towers remain. The ruins are protected as a cultural monument and are valued for their historical significance, scenic setting near the Římov Reservoir, and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
