Syria
Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in West Asia on the eastern Mediterranean coast, with Damascus as its capital. Its population is about 23–25 million people, mainly Arabs with Kurds as the largest minority. Syria’s terrain includes coastal plains, mountains, and large deserts, with the Euphrates River providing vital resources.
Arabic is the official language and Islam the dominant religion. Modern Syria gained independence from France in 1946 but has suffered from ongoing political instability, military coups, and, since 2011, a protracted and devastating civil war. The economy has traditionally relied on agriculture, trade, mining, and oil but has suffered greatly from conflict.
