Deir ez-Zor Suspension Bridge
Deir ez-Zor, Syria
The Deir ez-Zor Suspension Bridge was one of the most famous landmarks in Deir ez-Zor, spanning the Euphrates River and linking the city’s northern and southern banks.
Built during the French Mandate period in the late 1920s and opened in 1931, the steel pedestrian bridge became both a vital crossing and a symbol of the city. Known for its elegant suspension design, tall stone towers, and distinctive silhouette, the bridge was an important part of daily life and one of the most recognizable structures in eastern Syria. For decades, it served as a cultural and historic icon overlooking the Euphrates.
Sadly, the bridge was destroyed during the Syrian conflict in 2013, leaving only remnants of the structure behind. Despite its loss, the Deir ez-Zor Suspension Bridge remains a powerful symbol of the city’s heritage and is still remembered as one of Syria’s most iconic bridges.
