Saladin Castle (Qala'at Salah al-Din), located in the mountains east of Latakia, Syria, is one of the finest surviving medieval fortresses in the Middle East.

Built on a ridge between deep ravines and surrounded by forest, the site was fortified as early as the 10th century and later expanded by the Byzantines, Crusaders, and Ayyubids, giving it a unique blend of architectural styles. The castle is famous for its powerful defenses, including massive walls, towers, and a remarkable rock-cut moat carved into the mountain. After serving as a major stronghold of the Principality of Antioch, it was captured by Saladin in 1188 following a short siege, which led to its modern name.

Today, Saladin Castle is recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Crac des Chevaliers and Qal’at Salah El-Din.” Its dramatic setting and well-preserved remains make it an outstanding example of medieval military architecture and a testament to the region’s rich and complex history.
