The Tartus Old City is a historic coastal quarter in Tartus, Syria, known for its narrow streets, ancient fortifications, traditional houses, and strong links to the Crusader era.

Once the fortified port city of Tortosa, it preserves much of its medieval character and reflects the region’s long history as an important Mediterranean trading and military center. At the heart of the old city stands the Cathedral of Our Lady of Tortosa, a remarkable 12th-century Crusader church often regarded as one of the best-preserved Crusader religious buildings in the Middle East. Built on the site of an earlier Byzantine church and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it combines Romanesque and early Gothic architectural styles.

After the Mamluk conquest in 1291, the cathedral was converted into a mosque, and since 1956 it has served as the National Museum of Tartus, displaying archaeological treasures from the surrounding region. Together, the old city and cathedral offer a fascinating glimpse into Syria’s medieval, religious, and cultural heritage.
