Achala Fort

Achala Fort is a historic hill fort located in the Satmala hill range near Jamale, Maharashtra, about 55 km from Nashik.
Initially under the control of Adil Shah in 1636, it was later captured by Mughal forces under General Shaista Khan and then won by Maratha king Shivaji Maharaj in 1670.
The fort saw fierce battles with Mughal chieftains Mahabat Khan and Diler Khan, resulting in temporary Mughal control before finally being surrendered to British Colonel Briggs in 1818. Situated at an elevation of about 4,024 feet, Achala Fort features rugged terrain, rock-cut steps, ancient water cisterns, and panoramic views of the Sahyadri mountain range.
It was part of a defensive cluster of forts including Ahivant and Mohandar forts, mainly guarding the region. Today, the fort is a popular trekking destination, known for its challenging ascent and rewarding vistas, with historical ruins reflective of its medieval military significance.
