Adilabad Fort
Delhi, India
Adilabad Fort in Delhi, also called Muhammadabad, was built in the 14th century by Muhammad bin Tughlaq, the son of Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq. It served as a smaller, strategically important fort near the larger Tughlaqabad Fort and was part of the city of Jahanpanah, the fourth city of Delhi.
The fort’s design resembles a scaled-down version of Tughlaqabad, featuring massive defensive walls that once stretched about 8 kilometers with bastions and battlements. Inside, most original buildings have not survived, but excavations suggest there was a palace with only two rooms and a large courtyard.
The fort also included innovations like a water supply system fed by nearby streams. Today, the fort is well-maintained with manicured lawns and gardens inside the walls, and the remains provide panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the neighboring historical sites. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and open for public visits.
