Agra Fort, also known as the Red Fort of Agra, is a majestic fortress made of red sandstone located on the right bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, Uttar Pradesh.

Commissioned by Emperor Akbar in 1565 and completed around 1573, the fort served as the main residence and seat of government for the Mughal emperors when Agra was the capital. The fort complex, sprawling over 94 acres, is crescent-shaped with massive walls up to 70 feet high, surrounded by a deep moat.

It symbolizes Mughal power and architectural brilliance, blending Islamic, Persian, and Indian influences. Subsequent emperors, including Shah Jahan, added marble palaces and mosques, such as the famous Jahangiri Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas, and the Moti Masjid. Shah Jahan was famously imprisoned within Agra Fort by his son Aurangzeb during his last years.

The fort’s historical importance and elegance earned it a UNESCO World Heritage status, and it remains a key cultural and tourist landmark alongside the nearby Taj Mahal.
