Ahivant Fort
Maharashtra, India
Ahivant Fort, located about 55 km from Nashik in Maharashtra, is an important hill fort situated on a large, relatively flat plateau at an elevation of approximately 3,890 feet.
It is close to Achala and Mohandar forts, which were built to defend Ahivant Fort. Historically, the fort was under the Adilshahi Sultanate in 1636 before being captured by the Mughals under Shah Jahan’s general Shaista Khan. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured the fort in 1670 but it was later fiercely contested and eventually surrendered to the Mughals again under Aurangzeb's chieftain Mahabat Khan.
The fort covers about 250 acres and features several water tanks carved into rock, remains of houses, large caves, and ruins of bastions and ramparts. The terrain is rugged and requires careful climbing, with old stone steps and caves visible on the fort. From the top, panoramic views of surrounding forts and valleys can be seen. The fort's ruins reflect its strategic military importance and the layered history of regional powers.
