Ahmednagar Fort, also known as Bhuikot Killa, is a historic fort built around 1490 by Malik Ahmad Nizam Shah I, the founder of the Nizam Shahi dynasty.
Initially constructed as a mud fort, it was later reinforced with black basalt stone, particularly under Hussain Nizam Shah, transforming it into one of the most formidable forts in the Deccan region. The fort has an oval shape spanning about 1.7 kilometers in circumference, featuring 24 bastions, thick stone walls up to 30 feet wide, and a deep moat originally filled with water to deter invaders.
It was strategically designed with limited entry points including iron-spiked gates and guard chambers, and inside, there are royal quarters, courtyards, prayer halls, storerooms, and underground granaries. The architecture blends Indo-Islamic and Deccan styles, with intricate carvings and a layout optimized for defense and sustaining
