Aihole, located in Karnataka, India, is known as the cradle of Hindu temple architecture, dating from the 6th to the 8th centuries.

Once the capital of the early Chalukyan dynasty, it features over 120 Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist monuments spread across its landscape. Aihole stands out for its experimentation with temple architecture and artistry, showcasing 16 types of free-standing temples and four rock-cut shrines, blending Dravidian and Nagara styles into what is known as the Vesara style.

The site includes significant temples such as the Durga temple with its unique apsidal layout, the Jain Basadi, and the Meguti temple, each illustrating the evolution of temple design, sculpture, and religious traditions. Despite damage from later invasions, Aihole remains a key archaeological and cultural site, reflecting centuries of religious and architectural development in South India.​
