Ailinglaplap Atoll
Ralik Chain, Marshall Islands
Ailinglaplap Atoll is one of the largest and most historically important atolls in the Ralik Chain of the Marshall Islands.
Made up of about 56 islets surrounding a vast lagoon, its name means “great lagoon” in Marshallese, reflecting the atoll’s impressive size and natural beauty. Traditionally regarded as the seat of powerful Marshallese chiefs, Ailinglaplap has long been a center of culture, navigation, canoe-building, and local traditions. Today, its communities rely mainly on fishing, copra production, and small-scale agriculture while maintaining many aspects of their traditional way of life.
The atoll is known for its clear lagoon waters, coral reefs, white-sand islets, and excellent opportunities for boating, fishing, and surfing. Unlike some northern Marshall Islands atolls affected by nuclear testing, Ailinglaplap Atoll remains largely untouched, making it a valuable destination for experiencing the natural environment and cultural heritage of the Marshall Islands.
