Bikini Atoll
Ralik Chain, Marshall Islands
Bikini Atoll, located in the Ralik Chain of the Marshall Islands, is a remote coral atoll made up of more than 20 small islands surrounding a large, turquoise lagoon.
Known for its stunning tropical scenery and rich marine life, it is also one of the most historically significant places in the Pacific. The atoll became famous after World War II when the United States selected it as a nuclear weapons testing site. Between 1946 and 1958, numerous atomic and hydrogen bomb tests were conducted there, forcing the local population to relocate and leaving long-lasting radioactive contamination.
Today, Bikini Atoll is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is visited mainly by divers who explore its clear waters and sunken warships from the nuclear test era. While radiation levels have decreased over time, the atoll remains largely uninhabited and stands as both a natural paradise and a powerful reminder of the nuclear age.
