Mejit Island
Northeast Ratak Chain, Marshall Islands
Mejit Island, located in the northeastern Ratak Chain of the Marshall Islands, is a unique island that differs from most of the country’s coral atolls.
It is a single stony island surrounded by a fringing reef and narrow lagoon, situated about 110 kilometers northeast of Wotje. The island is renowned for its lush vegetation, including pandanus, breadfruit, and taro, and for having a rare freshwater lake, one of the few natural freshwater bodies in the Marshall Islands.
This lake supports local wildlife, including indigenous ducks, and adds to the island’s reputation among residents as a tropical paradise. Mejit Island is also famous for its finely woven pandanus mats, an important part of Marshallese culture and craftsmanship. With its small community, rich traditions, and distinctive natural features, the island offers a peaceful glimpse into traditional life in the outer islands of the Marshall Islands.
