Wotje Atoll

Wotje Atoll, Marshall Islands

---

Wotje Atoll, located in the Ratak Chain of the Marshall Islands, is a large coral atoll made up of about 75 islands surrounding a vast lagoon.

Known for its beautiful tropical scenery, coconut groves, and clear waters, it is one of the larger and more populated outer atolls in the country. The atoll is especially famous for its role during World War II, when it served as a major Japanese military base. Today, visitors can still see numerous wartime relics, including bunkers, artillery positions, airfield remains, and shipwrecks, making it one of the most historically significant sites in the Marshall Islands.

In addition to its history, Wotje Atoll is an important educational and community center for the northern islands, home to the Northern Islands High School. With its combination of rich history, traditional Marshallese culture, scenic lagoon, and remote island atmosphere, Wotje offers a distinctive glimpse into life in the outer Marshall Islands.
