Verified Akhnoor Fort

Jammu and Kashmir, India

Akhnoor Fort, located on a cliff overlooking the Chenab River about 28 km from Jammu city, was started in 1762 by Raja Tej Singh and completed in 1802 by his son Raja Alam Singh.

It stands on an archaeological site known as Manda, which reveals three historic layers including the Harappan civilization, early historic pottery, and Kushana-era ruins, underscoring the area's ancient significance. The two-storied fort features impressive military architecture with thick walls, regularly spaced bastions, and two-storied watchtowers with battlements and merlons.

An internal wall divides the fort into two parts, with a grand palace adorned with mural paintings and decorative arches on the southern side. Strategically designed with entrances from the river and north side, the fort has witnessed a turbulent history marked by the rise of regional powers including the Dogras, Sikhs, and Mughals. Today, Akhnoor Fort is a protected national monument managed by the Archaeological Survey of India, offering a rich glimpse into centuries of military and cultural heritage.
