Akita Castle Ruins, often referred to as the Akita Fort or Dewanoki, are the remains of an 8th‑century Nara‑period government fortress and administrative center in what is now Akita City, originally built in 733 by the Yamato court to colonize the region and control the local Emishi tribes.

The site functioned as a fortified provincial capital with moats, earthen ramparts, and gates on all four sides, and later served as the residence of the deputy governor of Dewa Province from the 9th to the 11th centuries until it was abandoned around the mid‑Heian period during the Former Nine Years’ War.

Today the ruins are designated a National Historic Site and include an archaeological park where several buildings, such as the reconstructed Northwest Gate and other government structures, stand on their original foundations, alongside the Akita City History Museum of Akita Fort Ruins, which displays excavated artifacts like roof tiles, wooden tally boards, and documents that reveal the daily life and administration of this ancient frontier government center. 

The complex is often described as a “government house” because it was not a feudal lord’s castle but rather an official military and administrative base of the imperial government, and visitors can walk through the reconstructed gates, examine the layout of the ancient town, and learn about Akita’s role as the northernmost stronghold of the Yamato state in early Japanese history.
