Yodo Castle Ruins
Kyoto, Japan
Yodo Castle Ruins in Kyoto were built in the early 17th century by order of Tokugawa Hidetada to replace the nearby Fushimi Castle and control an important strategic location at the confluence of three rivers. Constructed using materials from the old Fushimi Castle, it featured strong stone walls, water moats, and multiple watchtowers.
The castle’s main tower was relocated from Nijo Castle but was lost in a fire in 1756. Throughout history, Yodo Castle played a vital role in regional defense and politics, including during the Battle of Toba-Fushimi in the late Edo period. Today, only the stone walls and moats remain, and although the site faces some maintenance challenges, it remains a significant historical site reflecting Japan’s feudal past.
