Zakimi Castle Ruins
Yomitan, Okinawa, Japan, Japan
Zakimi Castle Ruins (Zakimi-jō ato) are the remains of a 15th‑century Ryukyuan gusuku fortress on a hill in Yomitan Village, Okinawa, Japan, built around 1416–1422 by the legendary general Gosamaru to protect the Chūzan kingdom from rival northern forces during the Sanzan period of civil war. The castle is famous for its sophisticated and elegant curved stone walls, which are among the most refined examples of Okinawan masonry and are so well constructed that visitors are allowed to walk on sections of the walls, a privilege shared only with Nakagusuku Castle among Okinawa’s gusuku sites. After centuries of abandonment following the unification of Okinawa under the Kingdom of Ryukyu, then damage and loss during the Battle of Okinawa and later U.S. military occupation, the site was restored after Okinawa’s return to Japan and has been designated a National Historic Site (1972) and, as part of the “Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu,” a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2000). Today the ruins sit about 125 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views of the Nakagami region and the East China Sea, and the grounds include the World Heritage Zakimi Castle Ruins Yuntanza Museum, which displays models, exhibits on local history and culture, and information on the castle’s construction techniques; the site is accessible by car or bus from Naha, with a short walk from the nearest bus stop, and is particularly popular for sunrise and sunset views as well as for quiet walks among the mossy stone walls and arched gateways.
