Yanagawa Castle Ruins
Yanagawa, Japan, Japan
Yanagawa Castle Ruins (Yanagawa‑jō) refer to the remains of a medieval flatland castle in the Yanagawa neighborhood of Date City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, which was originally built in 1426 as the main residence of the Date clan and later came under the control of Aizu Domain before being abolished in 1644 after the Uesugi succession crisis and incorporated into shogunate (tenryō) territory. The castle was a flatland (hirayama) type with water moats, trenches, stone ramparts (ishigaki), and earthen embankments, and its layout included multiple baileys and a large northern embankment and trench system added during the Uesugi period. Today only portions of the stone ramparts, earthworks, moat traces, and some reconstructed gardens remain visible, and the site is designated as a Prefectural Historic Site rather than a National Historic Site, unlike the nearby Yanagawa Castle in Date which has National Historic Site status. The ruins are located near Yanagawa Kibō‑no‑mori Park Station on the Abukuma Express Line, accessible within a few minutes of walking, and are open to visitors at all times, with parking available near Yanagawa High School and easy access to the Yanagawa Hachimangu Shrine that once held spiritual importance for the Date clan. Because the site is relatively modest and partially obscured by modern buildings, it is often described as a quiet, atmospheric place where visitors can see the preserved stone walls, moats, and gate complexes (such as a masugata gate arrangement) hidden among residential areas, offering a glimpse into the regional history of the Date clan and the castle’s role in the transition from the Sengoku period to the early Edo period.
