Verified Akola Fort

Akola, Maharashtra, India

Akola Fort, also known as Asadgad, is a historic hill fort located in Akola district, Maharashtra, India.

Originally built with mud by Akol Singh as protection for a nearby village, it was extensively fortified with granite stones, bricks, and lime by Nawab Asad Khan in 1697 CE during the reign of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, from whom the fort gets its alternative name.

The fort features several inscriptions that record its construction and renovation history, including a notable inscription on the Dahi Handa gate. It was strategically important and saw action during the Second Anglo-Maratha War when Arthur Wellesley camped there before a major battle. Despite suffering damage under British government demolition in 1870, parts of the fort including bastions, gates, a fortified tower (Fateh Burj), and an Eidgah for prayers remain.

The nearby Shri Raj Rajeshwar Mandir temple dedicated to Lord Shiva reflects the cultural heritage around the fort. Akola Fort stands as a significant example of Mughal military architecture and regional history in Maharashtra.
