Verified Alorna Fort

Alorna, Goa, India

Alorna Fort, also known as Halarn Fort, is one of the oldest forts in Goa, built in the 17th century by the Bhonsles of Sawantwadi to defend against Maratha attacks.

It is strategically located on the banks of the Chapora River in North Goa, offering panoramic views of the river and surrounding lush fields. The fort was captured by the Portuguese in 1746, renamed Santa Cruz de Alorna, and later recaptured briefly by the Bhonsles before falling definitively to the Portuguese in 1781.

Constructed mainly of laterite stone, the fort had a unique defensive architecture including four bastions, thick walls, cannon stations, and several watchtowers—of which only a few remain today. A deep well still exists inside the fort, along with the ruins of one building.

Over time, the fort has fallen into a dilapidated state but its scenic location and historical significance make it a quiet yet captivating site. Renovation efforts by the Archaeological Survey of India have been underway to preserve it, although it is currently not open to the public.

The fort reflects the turbulent history of territorial wars between Maratha and Portuguese powers along with the heritage of Goa's strategic riverfront defenses.
