Alwar Fort/Bala Qila
Alwar, Rajasthan, India
Alwar Fort, also known as Bala Quila, is a massive and historic fort located on a hilltop in the Aravalli Range above the city of Alwar, Rajasthan, India.
Originally constructed by the Nikumbh Rajputs around 928 CE and later fortified in the 15th century by Hasan Khan Mewati, the fort stretches about 5 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide. It features six massive gates, including the notable Laxman Pol that connects the fort to the city, along with 15 large towers, 51 smaller ones, and 446 loopholes designed for musket fire, reflecting its strong defensive design. The architecture is a blend of Rajput and Mughal styles, with marble columns and intricately patterned balconies.
Throughout history, the fort has changed hands among several dynasties, including the Mughals, Marathas, Jats, and eventually the Kachwaha Rajputs who controlled it until India's independence in 1947. The fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and houses several historic structures and a small museum displaying artifacts like old guns and swords, making it a significant cultural and historical landmark in Rajasthan.
Despite some parts being in ruins, it remains largely preserved, symbolizing the rich heritage and martial legacy of the region.
