Anegundi, located on the northern bank of the Tungabhadra River in Karnataka, is an ancient village that predates the famous Vijayanagara Empire capital at Hampi.

With a history dating back over 3,000 years, it was associated with various dynasties including the Satavahanas, Kadambas, Chalukyas, and Rashtrakutas. The name means "elephant pit," referring to its historical role as a sanctuary for the royal elephants of the Vijayanagara kings.

Anegundi is steeped in mythology as part of the Kishkindha kingdom from the Ramayana, believed to be the monkey kingdom ruled by Sugriva and the birthplace of Lord Hanuman.

The village features important historical sites such as the Anegundi Fort, ancient temples like Ranganathaswamy, Chintamani, Anjaneya and Ganesh temples, and the Gagan Mahal palace, which served as a royal residence. It remains a living repository of cultural heritage where history, mythology, and rural life converge, offering rich spiritual, architectural, and archaeological significance.
