Ankai Fort
Maharashtra, India
Ankai Fort, situated in Yeola Taluka of Nashik district near Manmad, Maharashtra, is one of the oldest and strongest hill forts in the region, built by the Yadava dynasty around the 12th century.
The fort and its twin, Tankai Fort, share a common fortification and are known for their unique location on two adjacent hills divided by a natural gorge. Historically significant, it was captured by Mughal general Khan Khanan in 1635 and later by the Marathas and British. The fort features seven rings of defense, rock-cut water cisterns, seven Buddhist caves, and the remains of temples, including a Hindu Pandav temple.
It is noted for its narrow, winding steps designed for defense and its impressive gates, including the main Manmad gate. The fort offers expansive views of surrounding areas and is a popular trekking and historical site today.
