Verified Arnala Fort

Arnala, Maharashtra, India

Arnala Fort is a coastal island fort located near the town of Arnala in Maharashtra, about 13 kilometers north of Vasai.

It was originally constructed in 1516 by Sultan Mahmud Begada of the Gujarat Sultanate to control maritime trade and defend the northern Konkan coast. The Portuguese captured the fort in the 16th century, strengthening its defenses with bastions, artillery platforms, and freshwater storage.

In 1737, the Marathas under Chimaji Appa recaptured Arnala Fort, making it a crucial naval base that helped protect their coastline from Portuguese and British forces. The fort is roughly rectangular with strong stone walls, ten bastions (though only one remains fully intact), and an octagonal freshwater reservoir.

Within its walls are temples dedicated to deities such as Ambakeshwar and Bhavani, as well as tombs of Muslim saints, reflecting its diverse cultural history. Arnala Fort’s strategic location at the mouth of the Vaitarna River allowed it to oversee maritime trade routes and served as a key defensive structure through various colonial and regional conflicts. Today, it remains a historic monument marked by its unique military architecture and scenic views of the Arabian Sea.
