Asherigad Fort
Khadkawane, Maharashtra, India
Asherigad Fort, also known as Asheri Fort, is a historic hill fort about 102 km from Mumbai and 88 km from Thane, located in the Palghar district of Maharashtra near the village of Khodkona.
It was built by Bhojraj of the Shilahara dynasty around 800 years ago. The fort changed hands over centuries, coming under the control of the Gujarat Sultanate, Portuguese in 1556, Mughal forces briefly, and finally was captured by the Marathas under Chimaji Appa in 1737. The fort has thick stone walls, five water tanks carved from rock, secret caves, remnants of ancient pathways, and inscriptions showing Portuguese influence.
It was an important strategic defense point on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway and was known as the "elder brother" of forts in the Palghar range due to its size and strength. Today the fort is popular among trekkers and history enthusiasts for its rugged terrain, panoramic views, and the historical relics remaining onsite.
