Verified Asirgarh Fort

Madhya Pradesh, India

Asirgarh Fort, located near Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh, is an ancient and strategically significant fort often called the "Key to the Deccan" because it commands the crucial Satpura pass linking northern India with the Deccan plateau.

It was originally built by Asa Ahir, a local ruler, and later came under the control of the Mughals, Marathas, and the British. The fort complex consists of three interconnected parts named Asirgarh, Kamargarh, and Malaygarh, each with its own water reservoirs, granaries, and escape routes.

Architecturally, it reflects a blend of Indian, Islamic, Persian, and Mughal styles, housing notable structures such as the Gupteshwar Mahadev temple, which is tied to legends of the Mahabharata warrior Ashwatthama, and a mosque with Mughal inscriptions.

The fort has large stone walls, bastions, and intricate gates, and it also contains British-era ruins including barracks and graves. Its location atop a hill offers panoramic views of the surrounding valleys, and the fort played a key role in several historic sieges, including one by Mughal emperor Akbar in 1600.
