Aswan Botanical Garden
Egypt, Egypt
The Aswan Botanical Garden is a lush island‑set garden on El Nabatat (Kitchener’s) Island in the Nile River, just west of Elephantine Island in the city of Aswan, southern Egypt.
Covering about 6.8 hectares (roughly 17 acres), it contains hundreds of plant species, including many tropical and subtropical exotics brought from Africa, India, the Far East, and other parts of the world, arranged along a network of shady paths through palms, flowering trees, and dense greenery.
The garden began in 1899 when British commander and plant‑loving Lord Horatio Kitchener developed the island’s vegetation, and it later became a public botanical reserve run by the Egyptian government, now serving as a quiet green retreat and bird‑rich oasis popular with both locals and tourists, reachable by small felucca boat from the city center.
