Verified Japanese Gardens

Helwan, Egypt, Egypt

The Japanese Garden in Helwan is a unique public park in Cairo, Egypt, built in 1917–1919 by Egyptian architect Zulfiqar Pasha as a gift to Sultan Hussein Kamel and designed in Asian style to symbolize the civilizations of the East.

Covering about 40,468 square meters (roughly 10 acres), it features Japanese-inspired architecture including a tall pagoda, beautiful arbors, an artificial lake with fish ponds and canals, rolling hills, diverse trees, and over 30 identical stone Buddha statues alongside larger seated Buddhas, a 10-foot Buddha head, statues of turtles, elephants, and the famous three wise monkeys.

The central promenade is lined with sculpted pink lanterns, and an elevated area offers panoramic views of the garden. Originally called the "Asian Life Kiosk," it was renamed Japanese Garden and became Helwan’s most attractive green space, hosting bands at a large gazebo and even serving as a leisure spot for British Army soldiers during WWII.

After years of neglect, it was restored from 2005 to 2006 at a cost of 5.5 million pounds with some assistance from the Japanese Embassy, though it remains an Egyptian-managed project. The garden is best visited in spring when trees and plants are in full bloom, and it’s easily accessible via Cairo Metro Line 1 to Helwan station (four blocks away), with admission around 2 Egyptian pounds.
