Mazhar Botanic Garden
Kerdasa, Egypt, Egypt
Mazhar Botanic Garden, located in the Barageel district of Giza (near Kerdasa) about 5 kilometers from central Cairo, is Egypt’s first privately owned non-profit botanical garden.
Spanning 23 acres, it serves as a sanctuary for biodiversity with a living collection of 60,000 to 250,000+ plant specimens, including tropical plants, desert succulents, palms, trees, shrubs, bamboo, cactus, ferns, and aquatics. Founded in the 1950s by architect Shehab A. Mazhar from what began as a fruit and flower garden, it now houses five greenhouses, three glasshouses, seven conservatories, a herbarium managed by Egypt’s chief botanical gardens consultant Dr. Therese Labib, and a laboratory for soil and plant analysis.
The garden is affiliated with Botanic Gardens Conservation International and focuses on conservation of endangered species, scientific research, plant breeding experiments, and education, employing over 100 engineers, doctors, and farmers to maintain its standards. Visitors can explore three main areas—the Plant area, Herbariums area, and Gardens—enjoying rare plants, serene scenery, and informative guided tours, with the garden open daily from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
