Ater Fort
Madhya Pradesh, India
Ater Fort in Madhya Pradesh was built between 1664 and 1668 by the Bhadauria kings Badan Singh, Maha Singh, and Bakhat Singh in the Bhind district.
The fort stands on the ravines of the Chambal River and reflects classic Rajput-style architecture. It is known for several imposing structures including Khooni Darwaza (Bloody Gate), Badan Singh Ka Mahal, Hathiapor, Raja Ka Bangla, Rani Ka Bangla, and Barah Khamba Mahal, many of which are now in ruins but still showcase the grandeur of the era.
Strategically positioned, the fort was involved in a notable battle in 1737 when Maratha forces led by Malhar Rao Holkar were defeated by a coalition of the Nawab of Awadh and the Maharaja of Bhadawar. The fort offers a glimpse into the martial history and architectural brilliance of medieval India and commands panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
Despite its deteriorated condition, it remains a significant heritage site connected with the brave history of its builders and the region.
